Computer Vision, A profound technology that grands the ability to see and understand digital contents, objects or real sceneries to a computer system or machine. The field of Computer Vision is fundamentally a sub-set of Artificial Intelligence (AI), which aims to create artificial systems that automatically obtain information from the surroundings.

Artificial Intelligence typically deals with human-like activities and processing of information, which requires input data provided by a computer vision system about the surrounding environment acting as a vision sensor.

What is Computer Vision?

The fundamental aim of the computer vision is to observe a digital content and infer something about the observed content. It is a multidisciplinary scientific field which uses artificial intelligence-based algorithms and general learning methods to achieve cognitive abilities of human vision. Analyzing a digital content invloves extracting fragments of the content which may be an image, object, text description, etc.

Need for Computer Vision

In this digitalized word, a lot of operations are performed by mechanical and computer systems, most of which are run automatically without human interventions enhancing the productivity of systems to an unimaginable extent. All with the help of cognitive abilities offered by Artificial Intelligence through sensing and understanding of the digital ecosystem as well as the physical word via Computer Vision.

The internet is comprised of tremendous amount of digital contents such as images, videos and texts, millions of which are being created, uploaded and viewed on a daily basis all around the word. Hence, it is humanly impossible to analyze, process and verify each and every content being uploaded on online. However, the ability of computers to see and understand entities has made complex processing of digital information a lot easier and automatic. This is just one example out of several applications of computer vision.

Applications of Computer Vision

Computer Vision combined with Deep Learning has many impressive applications nowadays, some of which might even surprise you, in automatic object detection, facial recognition, palm recognition, image classification, monitoring health of crops and livestock, automatic car driving, medical diagnosis and so on.

The tremendous potentials of computer vision have made the techno giants across the globe including ZKTeco to focus towards computer vision research and development. It is forecasted that in the near future computer vision will diversify its applications into various sectors including Biometrics, Security, Retail, Robotics, Healthcare, Agriculture, Automotive, Banking, etc.

Futuristic Trends in Computer Vision

Biometrics & Security

Computer Vision based Biometric Systems offer automatic facial and palm recognition without having to maintain a particular pose or angle, thereby providing instant access to users and improving convenience.

Parking Systems integrated with computer vision technology automatically scan number plates of vehicles and provide access to the pre-registered vehicles without any human intervention, thereby facilitating parking management operations quickly.

Retail Industry

In retail industry, Video Surveillance solutions integrated with computer vision continuously monitor customer activities and able to identify an object taken from a shelf as well as the person who has taken it. If the item is placed back to the shelf, the system automatically removes the object from the system data. This system is connected to respective customer billing service or POS terminal, hence automatically charging the required amount once the customer leaves the shop.

Digital display panels driven by computer vision technology could trace out customers facial attributes and will be able to display the superimposed image of the individuals with matching outfits enhancing customer experience.

Computer Vision based vehicles will improve safe transportation of people by enhanced sensing of driving field. Computer vision sensors could detect 360 degrees of movements in surrounding area and could detect obstacles as well as signals even from far way distance.

Computer Vision in healthcare is rather a new concept of helping healthcare professionals to accurately recognize, diagnose and classify a set of conditions or illnesses in early stage, thereby eliminating the possibilities of inappropriate diagnosis or treatments. Computer vision image analysis will be able to reveal and estimate health conditions or issues better than human eyes, which potentially improves clinical outcomes.

Agriculture & Farming

Large scale farms are beginning to adopt computer vision based systems to improve and facilitate various agriculture operations for more efficient growth methods, productivity and increase yields. Computer vision sensors detect conditions of crops and able to distinguish between healthy and stressed crops such as infected with disease or insects, nutrient deficiencies and dehydration, thereby helping farmers to facilitate appropriate treatment methods in early stage itself.  Certain systems also monitor environmental conditions of agricultural fields such as nitrate level in soil, humidity, etc. and provides accurate data for appropriate farming. Similarly, computer vision systems can be used to monitor and track health and well-being of livestock to improve farming.

Computer Vision based image recognition systems can be used to automatically classify, extract and authenticate information from documents such as Passports, Aadhar Cards, Pan Cards, checks, etc. The extracted data can be automatically fed into computer systems, which significantly improves the productivity of bank employees as well as saves the time and energy of both bank employees and customers.

In the industrial sector, computer vision applications can be used to monitor and analyze the status of infrastructure facilities such as remote wells, work activity, chemical factories, nuclear power plants, site security, petroleum refineries, etc. Information gathered by the computer vision sensors placed in these areas are passed on to AI system which provides critical insights on maintenance, safety measures, or any other necessary steps to be taken, there by avoiding occurrence of potential disasters or accidents.
